Thanksgiving is coming up here in less than a week in the United States, and that makes it the perfect time to revisit a little Dan Bern.
I’ve written about Dan Bern a few times in the past, but I wanted to bring him back now specifically because of his song Thanksgiving Day Parade. This is an epic song (close to eleven minutes!) with over a dozen versus and no choruses, and yet it all works as a journey from beginning to end.
The lyrics don’t tell a story, in the traditional sense, that carries through from verse to verse. Rather, there’s a feeling of coherence. Bern paints a picture, using colors from all over his palette to sing about friends and community and charity and joy and sex and youth and age and love and existence. It all builds towards the penultimate verse, which stretches itself out, gathering us all up together as the instrumentation gradually washes over us and carries us away in its flow.
I have hardly ever listened to this song when it didn’t bring me to chills and smiles by the very end. Enjoy!
